It is easy to get confused between Boston terriers and French bulldogs as they both might seem similar to most people. A Brief History of The Breeds

Boston Terrier’s name gives away the fact that the breed came from Boston. Back in the late 1800s, a lot of cross-breeding of English Bulldogs with English White Terriers and English Bull Terriers was done. Consequently, the Boston Terrier came into being, and the US fell in love with it.

Probably the reason why both the breeds look similar is that they both have the English Bulldog as their ancestor. So, the history of the French Bulldog is somewhat similar. The English Bulldog and the French Terrier were interbred to make the French Bulldog that is adored by many today.

Markings

While Boston Terriers sport the black brindle markings, the French Bulldogs may be fawn, white, brindle, or cream. The Terrier also has seal and chess-board style black and white colors.

Snouts

The short snouts are hard to miss on the two breeds. Both the dog breeds have broad jaws. Their nostrils are broad, with a line going down the middle. Since they have small nostrils and bigger palates, they can end up with health issues in terms of breathing. If you are planning on getting any of the two breeds, you should be aware of this beforehand.

Ears

If you are not careful about keeping them warm, they will end up with health issues during the colder weather.

Barking

Both the dogs are quite friendly and like to get the limelight. As a parent, you can gift your child with a best friend in the form of a Boston Terrier or a French Bulldog. They are quick to warm up to family members are fun to play with. French Bulldogs are often called clowns because of their fun personalities. They are known for making the humans around them laugh. Moreover, they are also very protective of kids.

Just like any bull terrier, the Boston Terrier would also feel jealous if it thinks that it is being neglected. So, you have to make sure that the dogs are getting their share of the attention too. Boston Terriers also need to be properly trained. Take them to the park and let them socialize with their fellow dogs. If you keep them inside too much, they become territorial and might not be able to socialize well with people or even dogs.
