When is the Westminster Dog Show 2023?
1. Introduction to Westminster Dog Show
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is one of the most prestigious dog shows in the world. It is held annually at Madison Square Garden in New York City and dates back to 1877. Every year, hundreds of purebred dogs from all over the world compete for the title of Best in Show at this premier event.
2. Westminster Dog Show 2023 Date and Location
The Westminster Dog Show 2023 will take place on February 13th and 14th, 2023 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY. This will be the 147th annual show hosted by the Westminster Kennel Club.
3. History of the Westminster Dog Show
The first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was held on May 8th, 1877 in Manhattan’s Gilmore’s Gardens (now Madison Square Garden). At that time there were only 2 categories – Sporting Dogs and Non-Sporting Dogs – with just 27 entries total! Since then, the show has grown significantly with over 3,000 entries each year from all 50 states and over 190 breeds competing for Best in Show honors.
4. Eligibility Requirements for the Westminster Dog Show 2023
In order to be eligible to compete in the Westminster Dog Show 2023, a dog must meet certain requirements set forth by The American Kennel Club (AKC). These include: being registered with AKC; being at least 6 months old; being healthy; having all required vaccinations; and not having any disqualifying physical traits or behavioral issues as determined by an AKC judge prior to competition.
5. Categories at the Westminster Dog Show 2023
At this year’s show, there will be 7 different categories: Sporting Dogs, Working Dogs, Terriers, Toy Dogs, Non-Sporting Dogs, Herding Dogs and Miscellaneous Class (which includes newly recognized breeds). Each category is judged separately and each breed has its own judging criteria which determines who will win Best in Breed honors for that category.
6. Judges at the Westminster Dog Show 2023
Each year a panel of esteemed judges are chosen to evaluate each breed’s performance during competition day. This year’s panel consists of some of the most respected names in canine conformation judging including: Dr John Reeve-Newson DVM PhD DACVIM (Veterinary Medicine), Dr Richard Meen DVM DACVIM (Veterinary Medicine), David Helming MS DVM PhD DACVIM (Veterinary Medicine), Robert Shreve MS DVM DACVIM (Veterinary Medicine) and others who have been selected based on their expertise within their respective fields as well as their experience judging conformation shows around the world.
7. Prizes at The Westminster Dog Show 2023
The winner of Best In Show at The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show receives a cash prize of $50,000 as well as a solid silver bowl donated by Tiffany & Co., while winners of each individual breed receive a smaller cash prize plus other awards such as ribbons or trophies depending on their placement within that breed’s competition classifications.
