Dogs have been known to detect cancer in humans for a long time. They are able to differentiate between healthy cells and diseased cells. This is because cancer cells release a unique chemical signature that dogs can pick up on. It is not clear how they do it, but it is thought that they use the same receptors in the nose that we use to smell things.
Now, researchers from the University of Guelph have found evidence suggesting that dogs might be able to detect lung cancer as well. The study was conducted on 36 pet dogs, and they were given samples of breath from both people with lung cancer and those without it. The dogs were more likely to sit down in front of the person with lung cancer when given their sample than when given the control sample. This study has not been peer-reviewed yet, so there is no definite answer as to how accurate this test could be for detecting lung cancer in humans, but it’s still an interesting find nonetheless!
