Laika is a stray dog found by Russian scientists in Moscow. She was the first living creature to orbit the Earth and she paved the way for humans to explore space.
Laika was chosen as a subject of an experiment in 1957 to see if living beings could survive in space. The scientists were not sure that Laika would be able to withstand the journey, so they put her into a capsule with just enough food and water for 10 days.
The experiment was successful, and Laika returned alive after orbiting Earth for 7 days, 18 hours, and 55 minutes. This made her the first living creature to orbit Earth.
